The evolvement of hand drafting to computer aided drafting (CAD) is the sum advancement of structural drafting and this is despite the fact that we exist in an age where significant technological leaps and bounds are being made every day, across every facet of every industry. At Structerre we wanted to capitalise on the computing power that today’s smartphones, tablets and personal computers can offer and after months of hard work and inventive thinking from our Perth innovation team, we are excited to launch our 3D Virtual Tie Down Details.
3D modelling is used extensively in the construction of larger buildings, but the time and resources required made it an unviable option in residential construction and a technology out of reach for most engineers. But at Structerre, we found ourselves drawn to its potential and we began looking at ways to best utilise it, while embracing the advantages of the standardised and repeatable work our clients manage.
Further improving on the capabilities of 3D modelling, we embedded Quick Response (QR) codes and hyperlinks within our standard cavity brick construction tie down details, meaning we can now provide extensive high-resolution 3D detailing in a real-time, onsite environment. From the schedulers in the office to the guys and girls on site, our builders now have an instant go to resource. And the overall efficiency gains that is generated, namely less on site complications and therefore less harvested waste, effectively provides a reduction in cost for our builders and their homeowners.
The benefits of these details have also been realised on the back of a WA Building Commission report regarding the compliance of roof tie downs. This report found a high proportion of roofs built in WA to be non-compliant and we were able to use our newly developed tools to help our clients meet the Building Commission’s requirements, resulting in an increase in the level of documentation provided for the construction of residential stick roofs.
