Did you know that the Australian construction industry has the highest rate of suicide than any other industry? Research shows that around 190 Australian construction workers die by suicide every year. In male dominated industries, mental health and workplace wellbeing is often neglected due to the stigma that exists around male mental health, which is why organisations like MATES in Construction are much needed in the industry.
MATES in Construction was established as a response to this epidemic, aiming to reduce suicide in the construction industry and improve the mental health and wellbeing of Australian construction workers. To assist in the destigmatising of men’s mental health, the organisation believes that “suicide is everyone’s business” and it takes a whole industry to help implement this change. The organisation not only works in advocacy, but they also run fundraising and training programs to create people of contact within the industry to provide support, guidance and connect those who are struggling with professionals who can help.
Structerre would like to congratulate two of our employees, Shane and Ben for completing their MATES in Construction Connector Training. A Connector is someone who is trained to help keep someone in crises safe, while at the same time, connecting them to professional help. We are proud to have representatives of such an important organisation on our team!
